How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several connector pins, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
